No 56 High Street (Garden Room)
 
 

This was a bungalow-style structure built in the garden of No 56, Sutherland House. It was approached via a gate in Victoria Street.

(Minnie) uses this building as an 'art needlework' room after retiring from running the main Sutherland House building as a girls' school.
Meanwhile the main house has been taken over by antique dealer, B Granville. He has had the garden room built for Minnie, presumably to allow him more display space in the house.

Fifteen-year-old Mildred Button, whose late father, Joseph Button, has been running a drapery and outfitter's business at Bradford House, Marlborough Road, started work here this year. Read her account here.




 

Mary Anne Denny - 'Art needlework' ( K1933,K1937). Minnie dies in 1948 in The Sun Care Home in Hotson Road.



1940
The Garden Room becomes popularly known as 'Granville's Hut' and is used by the Royal British Legion as a clubroom throughout the decade.

Mary Gundry - artist. uses the Garden Room as a gallery for her work. It is named The Garden Gallery.

1997
Mary Gundry - Garden Gallery closes this year and reopens at No 64 High Street (SLHR)


 
 

During the first decade of the 2000s, the Garden Room is used in the summer months for weekend lunchtime performances by Jill Freud & Company theatre.

2012
Cornucopia antiques - Have moved here from the Former Chapel building in Blackmill Road when the latter is sold for redevelopment.

2016
The building is demolished preparatory to redevelopment.
