D E Canova - Watchmaker (K1908). This is the business of Deborah Ellen the wife of Robert John Canova whose father, John Manzia Canova lately ran a watchmaker and Jewellery business at No 13 Market Place and in Halesworth. Robert and Deborah's son, born in 1900, is named after his father and grandfarther - Robert Manzia. (C)

1916
Herbert Peck - Watchmaker. (K1916). Herbert has been invalided out of the services, having been severely gassed. He probably trained as a watchmaker before the war and now is glad to have this sedentary trade to fall back on.

He is joined by his half-brother, Arthur Cragie, some ten years his junior, who has himself been wounded by shrapnel from shellfire at the Battle of Passchendael and likewise invalided. Arthur received some basic training in watchmaking as part of his rehabilitation; the rest he will learn 'on the job' from Herbert. (Source: John Cragie, Arthur's son)

Herbert Peck - Watchmaker. This year, as the Great Depression begins to bite, Herbert Peck and his young partner, Arthur Cragie agree that the business can no longer support both their families. Herbert Peck - Watchmaker. (K1933,1937)

1935
Herbert Peck's shop window is broken one June evening by a brick wrapped in a bus timetable. The thief
evidently meant to grab the contents of the window but, fortunately for Peck, the brick also broke the glass display shelf and most of the window display fell onto the floor, out of reach. The thief succeeded only in stealing a tray of signet rings. (Source: East Anglian June 8 1935)
