This was a detached house with extensive workshops/ cart sheds to the side and rear. Immediately to the left, in the 1930s was a large wooden building which was used as J L Wickins' shop (see below).

1908
William J Blowers - Jobmaster (K1908) [ A 'jobmaster' is someone who rents out coaches and horses by the day or week] William is the nephew of the blacksmith (also called William Blowers) of No 42 High Street. As well as running his own jobmaster business, he works as a butcher for Fryett's at No 71 High Street. He is married to Edith Caroline (nee Wickins). They have a son, Victor Thomas, and three daughters.

Cyril Joseph Steley. whose father, William Steley, owned Steley's Grocery at No 17 Stradbroke Road, recorded this memory in an unpublished memoir written in his 80s:

" At the entrance to Stradbroke road and opposite the Sole Bay Inn, a notice hung on a cottage wall in the form of an advertisement bearing these words:

Turn to the left when you leave here
Salisbury Road will then appear.
Call at Number Ten and say:
"Can I have a trap today?"
Landaus and traps may all be hired
And all of them are rubber-tyred.

Mr Blowers, who had a butcher's shop in the High Street, also owned carriages and horses in Salisbury Road. His sign and advertisement remained as a memorial to him long after his demise."

 

1924
William J Blowers - We are not sure whether William is still running his jobmaster business here, or even whether he and Edith still live here, but he now runs the butcher's shop at No 23 Market Place where he trades under his own name. His and Edith's Son, Victor Thomas is now a ladies' and gents' tailor and has been allocated working space in the same building.

Meanwhile at No 10 Salisbury Road. Edith's older brother, John L Wickins, has opened a tobacconist and sweet shop as a separate entity in a large wooden hut to the left of the main house.

1937
W Chapman - Dairyman (K1937)

Note: The three businesses listed above seem to occupy parts of the Salisbury Road site. William and Edith Blowers continue to live there. However, in April 1937, William hangs himself in one of the sheds having suffered from depression for some years and what the coroner describes as 'imaginary money worries'. (Halesworth Times. April 21 1937)

1946
Denny & Son - Builders. (SRB 1946) Denny & Son have offices at No 75 High Street. They occupy part of No 10 Salisbury Road from 1st April this year as a workshop.
