There was originally a malthouse on this site. The building was bought by Henry Johnson Debney in1887 for use as a drill hall by the Volunteer Artillery of which his brother was captain (K1891). In 1900 it was in use by the Norfolk Volunteer Artillery (Eastern Division) (K1900), and in 1912 it was taken over by the 8th Cyclist Battalion Suffolk Regiment D Company. (K1912)
