Note: Although the
address is No 4 Victoria Street, this business also encompassed No 6 next door (which becomes
a petrol filling station) and the large mass of land
to the rear. The lock-up garages owned by Abner Goddard and rented out, are on this land which is today a housing
development and the Adnams Cellar & Kitchen Store. The shop (No 4) became an antique and gift shop
Abner Goddard – owner of lock-up
garages (Source: Petrol Licence Records).
The Goddard family has considerable business interests
in the town. Originally bicycle makers and retailers
operating out of Nos
60-62 High Street and the yard to the rear of it
which runs through to
9-11 Victoria Street, they later diversify into
motor services.
